A rather unappetising feast of studies have linked red meat to ill health and an early death, with processed meat singled out as being particularly dangerous.

The saturated fat content of red meat, the high amount of salt in processed varieties, cancer-causing chemicals produced during cooking and the preservatives used in processing are all said to be sending us towards an early grave.

Four years ago, the World Health Organisation decided the evidence warranted classifying bacon, sausages, sliced ham and other processed meats alongside cigarettes and asbestos as known causes of cancer. Unprocessed red meat, it said, is also probably carcinogenic.
